Ponderings on the new plate

2 Jun

The pyramid has gone round. I often think about what government means to kids. Once in school, they understand that there is a hierarchy, such as their teacher, school director or principal. They understand that they live in a town that is part of a city or state, that is part of a country.. even when it seems super clear though, I’ll get questions from kids – What kind of Brooklyn are you from? I’m not from New York, I’m from Brooklyn.. Clearly, it takes a while. So what does the government mean to kids? The new food plate is a great example of a good thing government can do for us all. What if we all printed out the new plate and put it on our fridge, and let our kids know that the people in our government – who live in a different place but are in charge of making decisions that affect all of us, care about what is on our plate. Would it help them to better understand part of what our government is good for? What if we all started to take a look together?

If you do print it out and put it on your refrigerator, let us know what comes of it.  Let us know what your family thinks of this colorful new plate.

Thank you for sharing! This is great and easier to understand.

  2. I do think it interesting, that we accept “protein” as a food group like grains and fruit. Protein is a nutrient. Thank you Marion Nestle for pointing this out!
