About

Belinda DiGiambattista and Felicia Desrosiers met while Belinda was between jobs on a yoga retreat Felicia led in Costa Rica in May 2008. Felicia talked about seasonal eating and conducted cooking classes, Belinda contemplated her next best step. 2 weeks later Belinda invited Felicia to start the conversation that would become Butter Beans. They talked shop during playdates with their children, and each wrote the story about what brought them to this project. Deep in Belinda’s story, was the memory of shelling butter beans as a kid on her grandmother’s farm. From this memory, a name was born.

Felicia grew up far from a farm. She was speechless when the child of the house where she housesat in college asked why she hadn’t eaten any of his growing lettuce in his absence. She had no idea how to harvest lettuce. Butter Beans came to life with the mission of serving students health food, educating them about the food we eat, sustainability of our food systems and choices, and teaching students how to cook, and love the process. This blog is about all of these things: food, families, school, farms, cooking…

    • Hi There!

I am drafting a post about this award and have a question. How do you know when a blog has less than 200 followers? I am trying to make sure that who I nominate certainly follows the blog award rules.

      Thanks for your help!

I had the same problem when figuring out who to give it to!! If you go to the reader, then where it says blogs i follow next to it it says edit, click on that and it brings up all the blogs you follow, click on one of the blogs and it will take you to a screen where it shows how many followers that blog has. Good luck 🙂

Food education is finally coming around and needs to get into schools too. Great theme!

    • Thanks! We serve healthy school lunches to 14 schools in the NYC area, and are teaching students about nutrition and food through in-cafeteria initiatives, along with in-classroom lessons. We also teach after-school cooking classes, and have a farm to table food + garden summer camp. Nutrition and food education is vital to promote the health and well-being of our children, and we are grateful that we can be part of the solution! Love your blog too, thanks for connecting and sharing good food with the masses!
