summer camp fun – week 5!

pcyZLPP30iv7yT_G0jO75yyqEHjifw6_TJkyJwAej_kWe kicked off our third and final session of the summer with eleven new campers this week! Despite the threat of rain on several occasions, our team of Butter Beans purple + yellow managed to stay dry, eat well, and learn a ton of exciting new things!

After a short introduction, our campers traveled to the South Brooklyn Children’s Garden for an afternoon of hands on activities. It was great to be at a garden designed for kids, and the campers felt right at home among the plants. We spent some time bonding in the playground before heading back to wrap up our first afternoon.

photo11On Tuesday our campers had their first full day in the kitchen! After planting our own seeds, everyone was hungry for a Lasagna Cupcake lunch! Served with homemade garlic bread and salad, it was like being in Little Italy! To celebrate the perfect August day, we spent the afternoon outdoors enjoying the sunshine.

Wednesday brought gloomy skies, and rather than risk being stuck in the rain we decided to hang back at camp and do some more cooking! We traveled to the Union Square Farmers Market in the morning, and returned to camp to make a wholesome lunch of Tomato Soup and Panzanella Salad. We used our leftover garlic bread from the day before, which added great flavor and helped us clean out the fridge. After lunch, we ventured to Brooklyn for a visit at NuNu Chocolates. We learned about how chocolate was actually used as currency in the olden days, and we each got to dip our own graham crackers in the melted goodness. Yum!

IMG_7139We love to make ice cream at camp, and on Thursday we visited Chloe’s Soft Serve Fruit Co. to learn about non-dairy ice cream from the pros. We made healthy sundaes with banana, strawberry, and mango ‘ice cream’, which was a great way to fuel up for our next adventure to East New York Farms. They are experts at bee keeping, and at the farm we got to taste honey straight from the hive, try on some bee suits, and learn about the art of keeping bees in the city. The honey was fresh and sweet, and everyone walked away with a little more appreciation for our black and white stripped friends.

This week, our campers worked together to make a Taco Fiesta, including homemade guacamole, salsa, and tortillas! These definitely weren’t your average tacos. Following lunch, Ingrid was back for another afternoon of yoga. It was a nice way to relax on such a dreary day, and a great way to welcome the weekend. We finished off the afternoon with a special dessert and movie.

It’s hard to believe that next week will be the last week of the summer! After months of anticipation and planning, it seems like the end came much too quickly. I couldn’t ask for a better group of campers to help close out the summer, and I am looking forward to a final week packed with food, farming, and fun!

everyday movement inspiration

You become engrossed in email, writing papers, reading articles, responding to requests, and all of the sudden you’ve been sitting for 3 hours straight!

Here are some tips on being more mindful of movement while sitting:

  • Get up every hour: set yourself a google calendar alarm, or any other sort of alarm that works for you. A constant reminder to get up might just do the trick!
  • Activity bursts: like our advisor Dr. David Katz encourage us to do – get up and do some jumping jacks, we just did and boy does it make a difference!
  • Stretch it out with these yoga poses: neck rolls, seated forward bends, eagle arms and stand up pigeon here + back and shoulder release, chair twists and side stretches here
  • Take a fresh air break! Go outside, and take a 10 minute walk. You’ll come back to your desk feeling refreshed and clear headed.
  • Learn more about stand up desks, and make your own set up work for you!

take pride in being outside

photo-5Many of us spend our days indoors.

Whether we are teaching, marketing, trading, defending, problem solving, designing, entertaining, creating, consulting, financing, advising or diagnosing we do much of it inside.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors. A significant amount of time indeed!

Being indoors can certainly impact your life as most of us sit for long periods of time, and breathe in lots of indoor air.

We are here to help inspire that remaining 10% (if not more) of your time to be spent outdoors, even in winter time. Read below for 5 daily outdoor and wellness tips for each part of your workday:

Before work:

  1. Wake up 30 minutes earlier to go for a walk outside. If you live in the country, take a walk around your yard. City dwellers take a walk to your nearest park. Bring your beloved coffee/tea in a to-go cup, sip as you go.
  2. Take a look at some early morning outdoor exercise programs like an outdoor bootcamp.
  3. If it’s cold out, prepare yourself by layering, and keeping your extremities warm and bundled (hat, scarf, gloves, boots).
  4. When the sun is shining earlier in the day, wake up with the sun for even more time outdoors.
  5. Soak up your vitamin D: try for at least 5-10 minutes of sunlight in the morning, and bask in it’s glow.

During work: 

  1. Get up from your desk every hour to stretch and get your blood flowing. Check out some simple yoga poses you can do while at your desk.
  2. At lunchtime, try to step away from your screen and prepare your lunch while clearing your head. Eat mindfully, focusing on chewing properly. Connect with coworkers, and have a chat/laugh a little! If you are working solo, play some music or daydream. If you must eat at your desk, catch up on some reading.
  3. In cold weather, eat by a cracked window to breathe in some fresh air.
  4. In warmer weather, eat alfresco.
  5. Consider a stand-up desk.

After work: 

  1. When you return home put your clothes, bag, coat etc… away in it’s proper place. Expending the effort right when you get home will save your sanity in the long run!
  2. Hungry? Have a light snack like nuts, hummus + crackers, fruit, crudités.
  3. After you’ve digested your snack it’s exercise time! Get those sneakers on and go outside for a power walk, jog, bike ride. If it’s warm and you like yoga or pilates, bring your mat to the park, your lawn or roof for an outdoor session. If you have a garden, garden away!
  4. Near a nature preserve, go for a hike, or exercise somewhere with a great view.
  5. In the city, chose to exercise away from traffic fumes.

Weekends: 

Plan outdoor activities with loved ones:

  1. Go for a hike
  2. Take a walking tour of neighborhoods
  3. Garden
  4. Play outside
  5. Go ice skating

Take ownership and pride in being outside! Your body, soul and mind will thank you!

stay present during thanksgiving

Thanksgiving 3_thumb[3]We would like to share a wise piece of writing from Sylvie Barthelemy, certified ayuverdic lifestyle coach + yoga and meditation teacher. She calls on us to be present during the holiday season and focus on our company, “…it is easy to forget that what nourishes us the most is not food but rather true, authentic, heart-to-heart connection with our fellow human beings. So, on Thanksgiving and throughout the Holiday season, please join me in making a conscious effort to offer your full, undivided attention to everyone you spend time with. I would not be surprised you find this practice so satisfying that even the sweetest treats of the season begin to pale in comparison. Giving attention is giving love. And love heals all.”

children asking for seconds on raw kale

6025692440_543276b369We taught a cooking class at PS 261 during their wellness week, and made a quick and tasty strawberry, banana and kale smoothie using greek yogurt and honey.

We started our class with a big stretch and a few jumping jacks to get us in the smoothie mood. Then we tasted kale raw, and asked for feedback from our students. Most of them didn’t really like the taste, they said it tasted like grass and other not-so-delicious things. We then explained all of the health properties of the fruits and vegetables we were blending, and stretched some more. We blended up the ingredients, and passed around smoothie cups for all.

They couldn’t wait to dig in! As you can expect, they all loved it. So we asked them if they could taste the kale in the smoothie? Some said yes, others said no. Then we asked if anyone wanted to bring back some raw kale to their classrooms as a parting gift. They all showed an enthusiastic amount of hands and fingers, and we passed out cups full of kale leaves. Some even asked for seconds, and we snacking on the leaves!

It’s a true gift to be able to spread the message to children that food has healing properties, and by eating well we become stronger, brighter and more brilliant!  Thank you to PS 261 for hosting us, we had a blast!
